2010 Is Looking Good So Far

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Hi everyone!  After my excursion to the PCA at the beginning of January it was time to head back to Costa Rica and back to work.  We’ve had a student since the 21st of January and I feel he is going to produce some very good results.

I’ve been pleased with my schedule lately (although I would like to wake up slightly earlier.)  I get up around noon, surf, coach, and then grind until around 2am or so.  After our student leaves I plan on grinding more.  Last night was a good night.  I took down the $109 turbo for around $9k.  I think I was well due for a 1st place finish in an mtt being that I have had 4-5 final tables this month.  Another nice score was finishing 2nd in a $5 turbo for $3800 and two nights ago I final tabled the $501r 1a but finished 6th for about $1500.

The mtt sngs have also beein going my way.  I haven’t really played that many this year beacuse I’ve got into the habit of grinding mtts along with my sngs.  Normally when I get deep in an mtt I wind down my games so I can focus.  I’ve been making a lot of deep runs and also have a student so the amount of volume hasn’t been at its max.  Anyway I’ve made $5,673 at sngs thus far and $11,205 at mtts.  Making a total of $16,877 profit for the year so far.  I don’t plan on slowing down either.  Pura Vida!

PCA & Goals for the Year

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Hello everyone. As you may know I ventured out to the Bahamas from Jan 4th-12th for the PCA main event. It was a good experience even though I busted on day 2. I went into the tournament on day 1a with the upmost confidence. My table was alright, with only about 4 players who seemed to know what they were doing and the rest kinda meh. The guy to my right seemed like a good cash player, raising a lot of pots and 3 betting pretty wide which caused me to have to alter my game in certain spots against him. My first big hand (for a little over 60k in chips after a 30k starting stack) was against this older woman with a lot of bling. She opened from utg+1 and i have pocket 9’s from middle position so I flat call. The guy to my direct left also calls and the rest fold. The flop was 9 of diamonds and two random under cards, one of those also being a diamond. Actions on her and she checks. With two diamonds on the board and two players in the pot I elected to bet out about 2/3 the pot. The third player reraises and the old lady insta calls. This is kind of weird for me. I could just flat call but a diamond could put me in a really weird spot. Also the guy who re-raised was a very tight player so I assumed he had a hand. I actually put him on a lower set. So I tank for a bit and shove my stack in there. This also could look like I have top pair with a good kicker or an over-card flush draw as well. The re-raiser tanks for a bit and folds and old lady snap calls. She flips over AJ of diamonds. I had to sweat that a little but thankfully she didn’t hit and I was chip leader at my table for the rest of the day chipping up to about 64kish.

The next day was day 1b so I had the day off to explore and just kind of relax. That night I met up with j0hndayt0n, athanasios9, tmoney and his girl, bfizz11, and a few others that I cant remember I believe dcj123. We went out and got dinner (I won the flip for that btw :) ) and got some drinks. It was pretty cool meeting the guys that I grind with on the regular. Also we were all still in the tournament which was pretty awesome.

I felt good going into day 2 even after having drinks the night before. I had an above average stack which was about 55k or so. I kind of floated along for a while, only getting involved in a few pots before losing some chips with 10’s against AQ. The blinds we’re 400/800 and it was folded to me on the button with my 10’s. I had around 50k in chips so I raise and the big stack big blind (who has over 100k chips) 3 bets me. This is a weird spot because he had been playing pretty tight. I really consider a 4 bet and after a while of thinking I decide to flat. 10’s is a pretty strong hand in this situation and I like flatting in position against this player. The flop is AQA and he checks. I check behind. There’s no reason to bet here I think because he’s hardly ever going to call with a worse hand and if he’s got a lower pocket pair he may try to bluff a future street. The turn is a random low card and it goes check check and the river is also random. Because he checks both the flop and turn I feel that I am ahead. He could have something like a lower pp or KJs K10s J10s something of that nature a lot of the time. He bets out on the river and I call. He flips over AQ. If he would have bet earlier streets I think i could have got away from it pretty easily but the fact it was checked all the way down is the reason I called. I think with an ace or queen he bets the turn most of the time. O well It didn’t cripple me so I wasn’t really worried about it. I fluctuate a little and pick up AA from the bb. I 3 bet a raiser and he flatted and called my continuation bet on the flop. Folded to my bet on the turn. This bumped my up to a little over 45k which was a nice little pot.

Eventually I make it to 800/1600 blinds with a 200 ante. A lot of chips in that pot fellas. I have around 40k chips from middle position and bump it up to 3800. The aggro euro guy to my left re raises to around 11k and its folded back to me. I’m not too worried about this because he had been raise-folding a lot and even 3 bet folded once or twice. Either way I’m getting it in in this spot against mostly any player so I shove. He kinda sighs and calls with QQ so I’m like ok lets flip. Flop comes AJ9 rainbow so I mentally fist pump but show no expression physically being that there are 2 more cards. Turn is a J. River is Q and there goes my tournament life for about 90k chips. This just goes to show how brutal poker can be at certain times. I know in essence I only lost a flip (a $30k in equity flip) but the ace gave me so much hope only to be crushed by the poker gods themselves. I took the walk of shame back to my room and relaxed for a bit. I then went and bout myself a $60 buffet which was extremely good.

A few days later my girlfriend came which I had been looking forward to. The thing about the Bahamas besides it not being that awesome, was that the weather really sucked that week. They had their record breaking low which was like 50 something degrees and it was very windy. Most of the time I wore a hoodie. It was kind of a bummer that we didn’t get to experience much of the outdoor stuff. We did go swimming in the ocean one of the days which was nice because the water was clear blue and also warmer than the air. We saw the aquarium which was awesome and also went into town for a day which was meh. We had a few nice dinners and went to the club a couple times which was pretty fun. It was her first time in a club so she got to wile out a bit :)

Overall if your thinking about going to the Bahamas I think you should reconsider and come to Costa Rica. There wasn’t much natural beauty there and most of it is pretty run down. The premises around Atlantis made me feel more like I was in a theme park and less like a tropical paradise. The whole time I was thinking about how much I already miss Costa Rica and can’t wait to get back. The best part about being in the Bahamas was having my girlfriend, otherwise I probably would have left early.

So now I am back in Richmond and I’ve been playing a couple hours every day. I’ve been doing alright just frustrated I’ve made a few deep runs and no big cashes. Starting this year I plan to play my normal stake mtt sngs and I’ve really started including low buy in mtts to my sessions. $2.20 turbos, $8.80’s, $5.50’s etc along with my normal $11-$55 mtts. I think that throwing these lower games in will be great overall because several of them have very nice top prizes (5k-13k) and the players are pretty bad the whole time, even final tables. It’s pretty cool because I’ll be grinding and randomly see I’m starting to get deep in something with a big stack. I’m not really sure what I expect to make this year but I’m working towards having over a 100k year. It’s good to set a goal but it’s hard because you never know where life may take you. You could have a nice cash for 20k+ and decide you want to take a break and actually enjoy the money that you’ve made. I love poker but I also love life and find it hard to sit in front of a computer screen for weeks or months on end sometimes. I’m excited for this new year, our future students, and our new website. I think the future is bright for spacegravypoker and cant wait to get out there in a few days. Pura Vida!

Challenge Fail

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Hey everyone!  So my month long challenge didn’t go as expected.  I played about 2500 games and only profited about $2700.  I think the main problem was my ridiculous break even stretch at the $2.20’s and $3.30’s for over 1000 games in the beginning.  Honestly, I didn’t even think that was possible at those levels to run that bad for such a long stretch but it is.  I mainly played 45 mans and 180 mans but threw in a couple 9 man sessions.  Another thing is that I probably could have dedicated myself a little bit more.  I did grind really hard but I know I’m capable of playing double that amount of games in a month.  It’s just really difficult to do that when all my friends are out surfing, hanging out, and having fun.  Another thing was that I had no money on the line or nothing to really lose if I didn’t meet my goal ($10,000.)

I apologize for my lack of blogging for the past week.  After my challenge I really didn’t feel like doing anything.  Last Sunday I got home (Richmond, Virginia) so I hung out with my girlfriend for a few days then came to my parents house for the holidays.  It’s nice seeing family but the transition from 90 degree weather and a beach in my backyard to a foot of snow on the ground kind of sucks.  I got sick within about three days of being home.

Since I’ve been snowed in I’ve been leisurely grinding all day, playing no more than about 10 tables.  What’s funny is that since the day after my challenge I’ve played 206 games and made $2,208.  Yesterday I finished 4th in the $7.50 turbo, 2nd in a $2.20 turbo, and had a decent cash in the sunday million.  The 2nd in the $2.20 was complete garbage because when I got heads up things got messed up.  First off I got it all in ftw with 2 pair and dude sucked out on the river hitting his two pair or flush or something stupid.  Then I grinded him down again, having a very nice chip lead, and pokerstars decided to freeze.  Since it froze it didn’t give me time (like when you disconnect) and sat me out.  By the time I got to another computer I had blinded off and finished 2nd for about 1k or so.  I was extremely extremely frustrated, not really for the extra $400 that I would have got for 1st, but for the satisfaction of beating 5300 people and getting mass TLB points.  Oh well I e-mailed stars about the problem and hopefully they will work something out with me.

One thing about poker and life is that you have to learn to forget the past, focus on the present, and look forward to the future.  Right now I’m pretty much snowed in at my parents house so I’m using this time to play mtt’s and my usual mtt sngs.  I’m really excited about going to the Bahamas for PCA with my girlfriend, and eventually heading back to Costa Rica.  By the way I am selling half my action in PCA so if your interested in buying shares PM me on 2p2 (facestealer) or leave one.  I’m pretty sure the poker gods gave me all of my run bad juice during my challenge so there wont be any for PCA.  Which basically means I’m gonna win. :)  Here is my graph for the challenge for you all to point and laugh at.  Enjoy!DisplayGraph

Finally a good day.

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Well to start off I would like to congratulate reef2287 for getting his face on the bottom of the pokerstars lobby.  GOOOOOO REEEEEFFFF!!!  Now on top of seeing him all day everyday, I also get to see him in my beloved pokerstars lobby,  a place where I use to find peace and solidarity.  Thanks reef.

Now with my challenge I am finally almost up to where I expected to be at this point.  Yesterday I came in 5th…or 4th I can’t actually remember at the moment, of the $11 Daily 30k, for about $2000.  I really would have been thrilled with a win for nearly 7k and also beating a field of 5300 would have been super rewarding.  I am really happy with the 2k though, I really needed it.   My account is now at $4000 and I can finally sigh with relief.  It had been fluctuating between 2k and 3k for about 4 days which was pretty irritating.  I had been mainly grinding the $11 45 mans, 180 mans, and $27 45 mans.  The key to this challenge is to know when to move up and it’s extremely frustrating to gain the role to move up, lose those games, and then move back down.  I think now I can grind most of my average stakes semi-comfortably (excluding $114 18 and 45 mans for now)  I’ll probably also have to be carefully with the $60 45 mans where it’s possible to go on 50+ buy in downswings.  I’m still keeping my goal at 10k for the month.  Due to some really inconvenient variance in the beginning of this challenge its going to be difficult, but still definitely doable.  Thanks for the sweat!  Pura Vida!

Update for $100 Challenge.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Hello followers of spacegravypoker.com!  First off I would like to apologize for my lack of blogging during this challenge.  I have been playing pretty hard and to be honest I didn’t really want to talk about experiencing one of the worse ends of variance i’ve had in my poker career.  I have definately lost way more money at the higher stake games I normally play but to play over 1k games at mainly the $2-$6 stake and only be up $100-$200 is extremely stressful.

One of the factors that played a role in this was that when I got my bankroll up to $400-$500 I moved up to the $6.50’s-$16 stakes where I ran really bad.  I had to move down twice but I’m not one to give up.  I knew that it really is just variance and sometimes you really can run worse than you can ever imagine.  I got my bankroll up to about $450 two days ago and yesterday decided it was time to move up again.  Only this time I experienced the complete opposite variance of before.  As of the last 24 hours I’ve won 3 $11 180 mans and came in 2nd in one as well.  Also  I’ve had several $11 45 man wins and $27 45 man cashes.  My bankroll is curently at $2626.84.  I’m still slightly behind where I expected to be at this point but I’m gonna continue the grind all the way.

Below is a copy of my results since November 11th (the start of the challenge.)  This includes Low-Mid stake 9 mand sngs, mtt sngs, and mtts.  Thank you to anyone whose been railing me and supporting me during this challenge.  I will post again in the next few days .  Until next time.

Updates to the Challenge

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Right now, its day 4 of the challenge. I’m aiming for 10k and hopefully I can surpass that. The update now is:

FaceStealer   211 $1   $5   40% $124   - N/A PokerStars 11/11/2009 11/15/2009

I took a shot with my roll at 16s and didn’t run as well as expected so I’ll have to climb back up. All I need is a couple good sessions to get back to my stakes where I normally play. Thats where I will make most of my money. As far as Sunday goes, I have to play in the Sunday Million since the prize pool is 2.5 million instead of 1 million. This will NOT count in the bet, as only a crazy degenerate gambler would play in a 215 dollar buy in tournament with a 250 dollar roll.  Even if i win, it doesn’t count for the bet. What will count though is tournaments within my roll, such as the 8.80 turbos and a couple of 5 dollar mtts. I will post updates tonight or tommorow morning.

Day 2

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Today I put in a decent amount of volume at the low stake sng mtts.  ($3 45 mans, $2 180 mans) and towards the end moved up to the $6 levels.  I’ve done really well since yesterday turning my $100 bankroll into $438.91 in two days.  I’m glad to be making such quick progress and intend on playing the $6’s and eventually moving up to the $16s in a couple of days (hopefully tomorrow.)  I’m pretty tired right now.  The entire house actually grinded together and it was really nice.  Hopefully by the end of the month I will have turned a substantial profit.

$100 Challenge

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

$100So as you all know from spacegravys previous blog, he thought it would be a good idea to show people that there is great money to be made at the low/mid stake sngs.  We have decided that I am going to take up this challenge as of yesterday.  I cashed out everything except for $100.  Yeserday I built my role up to $190 playing $1-$3 mtt sngs.  December 11th will be the end and we’ll see where I’m at.

Recent events/thoughts

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

The past two days have been very productive.  Well basically, we have all been surfing and it’s pretty tiring.  I feel like it’s something I want to pursue at the least.  Life out here is great and everyone is extremely friendly. As an example, one of our neighbors brought us lasagna that his wife made today. It was a nice welcoming surprise.  Grayson finally arrived to “la casa” today and it’s been great.  I feel like when we put our minds together we’re like a tribe trying to achieve the same common goals which are prosperity, the good life, friendship, and success.  I feel like so many people miss most important things in life and lead their lives selfishly, driven by fear and greed rather than a sense of what’s best for something bigger then themselves.  The vibe out here is so incredible I can’t even begin to explain it. Although I am an online poker player and I constantly “gamble” money, this place is slowly pushing my mind to the realization that there is more to life than money.

Pura Vida!

Costa Rica thus far

Friday, November 6th, 2009

I meant to write a blog yesterday being that it was my first day here but I got sidetracked and forgot.  It’s good that we all got here safe and so did our equipment.  Thank God nothing was lost or stolen on the way.  Yesterday we all took it pretty easy, exploring the new house and going out to eat.  I had snapper for the first time and it was delicious.  Today we woke up and went back in to town for groceries and other errands.  I attempted to play some poker today but my computer kind of messed up on me :(  It lagged up and i was out for a couple minutes but I think I broke even and maybe even turned a little profit.  I think it’s best that I just chill until we get our office set up and I can put in mass volume with no worries.  Also, about an hour ago one of our neighbors came to the door asking for help to move a giant, endangered sea turtle back into the ocean.  That was an awesome experience and quite a surprise.  It just goes to show that it really is an adventure here and there are so many great, unexpected things around the corner.  I’m going to close on that so take care everyone.  Facestealer out.
